Marine Biodiversity Conference: Advancing Coastal and Marine Conservation in MZ

Summary

The Marine Biodiversity Conference has established itself as a key event in promoting the conservation of Mozambique’s coastal and marine biodiversity.

Launched in 2023, the Marine Biodiversity Conference has established itself as a key event in promoting the conservation of Mozambique’s coastal and marine biodiversity. Led by the Foundation for the Conservation of Biodiversity – BIOFUND, the conference aims to disseminate, discuss, and exchange experiences on Ecosystem-Based Adaptation, the importance of Marine Conservation Areas, and the value of Mozambique’s marine biodiversity. It has become an annual platform for government representatives, academics, experts, coastal communities, youth, and decision-makers committed to environmental preservation.

BIOFUND’s involvement in this 5-year commitment is due to the Foundation’s accumulated experience in leading awareness and environmental education exhibitions on the importance of biodiversity at large-scale public events, held in partnership with governmental, non-governmental, academic institutions, and the private sector in various provinces of the country since 2015.

A Path of Growth and Impact

The first edition, held in Maputo from July 27 to August 2, 2023, gathered 470 participants and engaged over 30 partners, demonstrating from the outset a strong interest and willingness to build a collaborative network around marine biodiversity. An interactive exhibition at the Museum of the Sea captured the attention of both young people and experts, sparking discussions on coastal ecosystem protection.

Encouraged by the success in Maputo, the second edition of the Marine Biodiversity Conference moved to Nacala-Porto, Nampula Province, from June 17 to 23, 2024. Participation increased significantly, with 793 in-person attendees and over 6,000 online participants, substantially expanding the reach of discussions. Additionally, 548 students from 20 coastal district schools in Nampula actively participated in educational initiatives, strengthening environmental awareness among younger generations.

The Minister of the Sea, Inland Waters, and Fisheries, who actively participated in the two-day conference, emphasized the importance of effective communication and collaboration between the government, civil society, and the private sector to drive sustainable fishing practices and conservation measures. This shared vision ensured strong engagement from various partners and helped establish the conference as a national collaboration platform.

Key Themes of the Conference

  • Ecosystem-Based Adaptation (EbA): Discussion on the importance of integrated coastal resource management and sustainable fishing techniques, involving local communities in decision-making and marine resource protection.
  • Marine Conservation Areas: Addressing the challenges of resource management and sustainable use, the need to expand the network of protected areas, strengthen enforcement, and secure greater funding for marine ecosystem conservation.
  • Coastal and Marine Biodiversity: Highlighting the importance of transparency, research data exchange, and effective communication as key tools to raise public awareness, support marine species management, and influence public policies.

Outlook for the 3rd Edition in 2025: Beira City

The third edition of the Marine Biodiversity Conference will be held in Beira City, Sofala Province, from June 5 to 11, 2025, with the objective of further expanding the reach of the event by addressing the specific coastal biodiversity challenges of different regions of the country. The combination of exhibitions, expert discussions, and educational activities is part of an innovative format that strengthens the conference as a crucial platform for environmental awareness and enhances national and international cooperation in protecting Mozambique’s marine and coastal ecosystems.

A Collaboration That Strengthens the Initiative

Beyond the initial support from BAF and WCS, the conference benefits from the collaboration of various funding and institutional partners, including the Government of Mozambique, academic institutions, Blue Action Fund, Government of Sweden, World Bank, IUCN, FAO/SWIOFC, GIZ, Peace Parks Foundation, Italian Cooperation, RARE, USAID, Blue Planet Fund UK, Embassy of Portugal, European Union/PROMOVE Biodiversity, WIOMSA, BCI, NEDBANK, MOZABANK, and many others. This diversity of stakeholders enhances multi-sectoral cooperation and stimulates the exchange of innovative solutions for marine conservation, demonstrating the rapid growth and increasing relevance of the Marine Biodiversity Conference.

With remarkable results in environmental awareness, youth and expert training, and synergy-building among key actors, the Marine Biodiversity Conference is solidifying itself as a true success story in the protection and enhancement of Mozambique’s marine resources.
