BIOFUND and MZ LNG Partner for Biodiversity Conservation and Nature-Based Solutions

The Biodiversity Conservation Foundation (BIOFUND) and the Mozambique LNG Project, operated by TotalEnergies EP Mozambique Area 1, Lda. (TEPMA1), signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on July 2, 2026, marking the beginning of a strategic partnership aimed at promoting biodiversity conservation and the development of nature-based solutions in Mozambique.

The Memorandum establishes a framework for cooperation between BIOFUND and TEPMA1 for the development of initiatives that reconcile economic development with biodiversity conservation, thus contributing to the protection of natural capital and the promotion of sustainable development in Mozambique. Within this partnership, the two institutions will collaborate in identifying and implementing investment opportunities in nature-based solutions, sharing technical and scientific knowledge, and supporting actions that contribute to mitigating impacts on biodiversity and achieving net biodiversity gains, in accordance with applicable legal and regulatory requirements in Mozambique.

The Memorandum represents an important milestone in strengthening collaboration between the private sector and an institution dedicated to conservation, creating the foundation for a partnership that combines environmental responsibility and sustainable development.

For BIOFUND, this partnership represents another step in mobilizing new partners for biodiversity conservation initiatives in Mozambique, while simultaneously promoting innovative solutions that contribute to the preservation of ecosystems and the well-being of the communities that depend on them.

During the signing ceremony, Jean-Pascal Clémençon, Senior Representative of TotalEnergies EP Mozambique Area 1, Lda., stated: “Mozambique’s extraordinary biodiversity is one of its greatest assets, and through this partnership with BIOFUND, the Mozambique LNG project reinforces its commitment to ensuring that conservation and development advance in an integrated and mutually beneficial way. Together, we can build innovative solutions that protect ecosystems, strengthen communities, and contribute to a future where economic progress and environmental responsibility go hand in hand.”
