The city of Bissau is coming alive as participants from across Africa and around the world arrive for the 16th General Assembly of the Consortium of African Funds for the Environment (CAFÉ).
The Assembly officially opens on Monday, 28 September 2026, following a 2-day meeting of the CAFÉ Executive Committee. Hosted by the BioGuinea Foundation, the five-day gathering brings together more than 160 participants from over 57 countries, representing Conservation Trust Funds, governments, development partners, philanthropy, research institutions, civil society, local communities and other stakeholders working to advance conservation and sustainable development.
Held under the theme “Coastal and Marine Landscapes – Integrating Ecosystems, People and Culture,” the 16th General Assembly will provide a platform for participants to exchange knowledge, explore innovative approaches to conservation finance and strengthen collaboration around the sustainable management of Africa’s coastal and marine landscapes.
Discussions will explore a range of critical issues, including marine protected areas, traditional knowledge and culture, blue carbon and sustainable finance, blue economy opportunities, biodiversity conservation, and the role of communities and Indigenous Peoples in protecting natural heritage.
The Assembly comes at an important time for Conservation Trust Funds and their partners as they seek to strengthen long-term, sustainable financing for biodiversity and conservation across the continent.
Over the coming days, participants will engage in technical sessions, knowledge exchange, strategic discussions and networking opportunities designed to generate practical ideas, strengthen partnerships and advance solutions for Africa’s natural heritage.
As participants gather in Bissau, the 16th CAFÉ General Assembly marks another important milestone in CAFÉ’s continued efforts to connect Conservation Trust Funds, amplify African perspectives and mobilise sustainable financing for conservation.
