Tanzania Environmental Sustainability Trust (Chakwetu)

The Tanzania Environmental Sustainability Trust Fund (Chakwetu) — commonly known as Chakwetu — is registered in Tanzania as a non-profit, independent charitable entity, designed in accordance with the International Practice Standards for the Conservation Finance Alliance. Chakwetu plays a pivotal role in advancing conservation efforts across the country. In a landmark development on June 2, 2025, it entered into a funding agreement with the East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP) to support biodiversity offset initiatives nationwide. This collaboration is set to channel resources toward the protection of endangered and ecologically significant species, including the Ashy Red Colobus Monkey, Masai Apalis, Pancake Tortoise, among others. Through this partnership, Chakwetu reinforces its commitment to preserving Tanzania’s critical habitats and promoting long-term environmental sustainability.
